Prof. Dr. Klaus-Dirk Schmitz, full professor of terminology studies and language technology at the Institute for Translation and Multilingual Communication at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences, Managing Director of the Institute for Information Management at Cologne University of Applied Sciences, President of the International Information Center for Terminology (Infoterm), Vice-president of the German Terminology Association and Chairman of the German National Standards Committee "Systems for managing terminology, knowledge and content".

 

Adrian Hughes
director of performance solutions, Investors in Excellence

Adrian left a high profile role with Vodafone to join Investors in Excellence as Director of Performance Solutions. His 20 year track record also includes senior management roles with Lloyds TSB and eight years in the Great Britain rifle shooting squad. A certified Six Sigma Master Black Belt, 'Ade' also has a Masters degree in TQM and is a lead EFQM assessor. Clients describe him as: "enthusiastic, insightful, provocative and witty." One of them even said: "We feel lonely without him."

Jerzy Witkowski
Project Manager and Terminologist, IBM

Jerzy Witkowski is a project manager and a terminologist in the IBM Poland Translation Services Center in Wroclaw, Poland since 1998. He worked on numerous IBM globalization projects as a project manager, terminologist, tools developer, translator and file handler. Earlier he completed M. Sc. in Computer Science at the University of Wroclaw and also worked there as a Teaching Assistant in Institute of Computer Science. Currently his main focus is improving the automated quality checking of translated material.

 

Dr Isabella Moore CBE
Managing Director, COMTEC

Isabella Moore founded a company providing language services to industry in 1986, which she sold in 2002. From September 2002 to June 2004 she was the first female President of the British Chambers of Commerce and Vice-President of Eurochambres, the association of European Chambers of Commerce. She is a past Chairman of the Confederation of West Midlands Chambers of Commerce; past President of Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce. She has just completed a six year tenure as a Board member of Advantage West Midlands, the regional development agency for the West Midlands and Chairman of the West Midlands in Europe office and the Regional International Trade Strategy Group; she has been a member of the National Modern Apprenticeships Task Force; Chair of the National Women's Enterprise Panel, President of the Eurochambres Women's Network and Vice President of the SME Union in Brussels; Until March 2008 she was CEO of CILT, the National Centre for Languages. She is President of Prowess, the UK association of organisations and individuals who support the growth of women's business ownership and Chair of the Women’s Business Development Agency. She is now Managing Director of the company she originally founded, which she re-acquired with her daughter in 2007 and of J&AB Associates, a management and grant consultancy. Isabella holds Honorary Doctorates from Sheffield Hallam University and Aston University for services to industry and languages and a Fellowship from the Institute of Linguists. She was awarded the CBE in the 2004 New Years Honours List.

 

Sandra La Brasca

Sandra La Brasca is solutions development director at ForeignExchange Translations Inc., a leading provider of medical translations. Sandra has been working in the field of translation/localization for 20 years. A native of France, with a Sicilian background, she now lives in Louisville, Colorado.

André Pellet
Senior Director of Enterprise Solutions , COMSYS

André Pellet has been in the translation and localization industry for over 20 years, having served as President of a translation company - M2, Enterprises/M2 Limited, and then as Vice President at Welocalize - a leading mid-sized LSP. He has an engineering degree with a specialization in computer science, and has been active with the American Translators Association and its Washington chapter, NCATA, ALC, GALA, Localization World, and Multilingual Computing leading discussions on M&A and technology within the language industry.
André is currently Senior Director of Enterprise Solutions at COMSYS, leading the development of the industry’s workplace.

 

Dr. Francois Massion
Owner, D.O.G. Dokumentation ohne Grenzen GmbH

François Massion earned in 1986 his Ph.D. in lexicography at the University of Erlangen (Germany) and has over 20 years of executive-level experience in the translation industry.

He is owner and managing director of D.O.G. GmbH, a company specializing in localization and documentation services.

He has a teaching assignment in terminology at the Hochschule Anhalt (FH) in Köthen (Germany).

 

  Angela Starkmann
Language & Letters

Angela Starkmann is an independent project manager, translator, and trainer with nearly 20 years of experience in the field and a particular interest in life science.
She has worked as linguist and project manager on the customer side (Medtronic) as well as on the service provider side.
Angela lives with her family on the country side in Bavaria (Germany), and loves the combination of quiet village life and work in the international fast-paced localisation industry.

 

Madeleine Lenker
PhD Student, LRC

Madeleine studied at Cologne University of Applied Sciences in Germany and is an accredited English-German translator. She has a Masters degree in Terminology and Language Engineering from the same university and began working in localisation and translation industry. Madeleine is currently doing her Ph.D. in Workflow specifications for Enterprise localisation at Localisation Research Center (University of Limerick/Ireland).

Mark D. Childress
Senior Information Coordinator, SAP AG

Mark Daniel Childress grew up in California and majored in German studies at Humboldt State University in northern California. He went to Germany on a Rotary International scholarship in 1986 and graduated from Heidelberg University with a M.A. degree in German literature, linguistics, and political science. Mark joined SAP AG in Walldorf, Germany in 1995 as a translator and has been information coordinator for terminology issues since 1998. He gives frequent lectures on terminology issues to technical writers, translators, and universities, and has written articles on terminology work.

Daniel Goldschmidt
Internationalization Consultant, Localization Flow Technologies

As a senior software engineer and a professional in the globalization of software and content field, Daniel Goldschmidt has extensive experience in the internationalization and localization of large-scale enterprise applications and projects. Independently as well as through his association with Localization Flow Technologies, Daniel provides his client base with internationalization and localization expertise. He has recently served as a senior software engineer in the Google internationalization team, working on the Google localization framework. Daniel was invited by the European Commission to serve as an independent expert in the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) program. He holds a B.Sc. in computer sciences and mathematics (Cum Laude) and a M.Sc. in computer sciences, both from the Hebrew University, Jerusalem.

Jost Zetzsche
International Writers' Group

Jost is an ATA-accredited English-to-German translator, a consultant in the field of localization and translation, and a writer on technical solutions for the translation and localization industry. A native of Hamburg, Germany, Jost earned a Ph.D. in the field of Chinese history and linguistics from the University of Hamburg in 1996.

Jost joined the translation industry in 1997, supervising company operations for a staff of 60 at a localization and technical documentation provider. He has led or participated in localization projects in all major software, web, and documentation environments.

In 1999, Jost co-founded International Writers' Group and in 2005 the translation memory broker TM Marketplace.

The fifth edition of Jost's popular book, A Translator's Tool Box—A Computer Primer for Translators, is now available. You'll also find subscription information for his free computer-related Tool Kit newsletter for translators.

David M. Smith
President, LinguaLinx Language Solutions, Inc.

David Smith has worked in the language industry for almost two decades in both the United States and Europe. He operated a Russian translation firm in Albany, NY from 1991 to 1995 and worked in Moscow as the Director of the State University of New York at Albany’s exchange program from 1995 – 1996, where he also held a position on the faculty of foreign languages at Moscow State University. From 1997 – 2001, he worked for TransPerfect Translations and was subsequently appointed Director of Business Development for translations.com in 1999. A published translator, Smith holds an MA in Russian Language and Literature as well as an MA in Translation, both from the State University of New York at Albany. In 2005, Smith was honored as a recipient of the Business Review 40 Under Forty award recognizing outstanding business leaders under the age of 40. Smith currently serves on the Board of the Association of Language Companies where he is Treasurer.

Doug Lawrence
Amicus TransTec Limited

Doug Lawrence is a sought-after international speaker with an engaging style that is energetic, informative, and based on almost 20 years in the translation industry; having held several international sale roles with leading translation companies and a translation tool vendor.

Mr. Lawrence is a passionate advocate for the professional translation industry, working to raise its profile and promote the value chain mentality in clients, translation companies, freelancers and educators.

Lawrence founded the UK's leading independent translation technology consulting company, Amicus TransTec, in 2006. In 2007 Lawrence created the industry's leading sales training programme Selling Translations™ which now consists of 20 courses and has been completed in various forms by over 1000 translation professionals from across the globe. Selling Translations™ has been approved by the UK ATC, UK ITI and ProZ.com.

When not delivering training or running Amicus TransTec, Lawrence works for the UK Government as an Export Communications Consultant for UK small and medium sized businesses, as well as being a sessional lecturer on the Master in Translation Studies at Aston University. He is also a Business Language Champion visiting schools and encouraging children to study languages. Lawrence is one of the UK's Principal Experts to ISO TC 37 and is a qualified ISO 9001 Lead Auditor.

Lawrence holds a BSc in Computer Science and an MBA. He lives in the UK with his wife and daughter and enjoys keeping fit with running, yoga and resistance training. He is a keen amateur linguist, learning a little of the language of each country he visits.

 

Krzysztof Przyłucki
CEO of BTInfo and President of the Polish Association of Translation Agencies (PSBT)

Krzysztof Przyłucki obtained his degree in Computer Science at the Warsaw University in 1994, and completed post-graduate studies in Management at the Warsaw School of Economics in 1997. Between 1992 and 1995, he coordinated a team of translators for the Polish edition of PC Magazine. His responsibilities included establishing a group of translators, developing terminology, technical and editing standards, and implementing quality assurance procedures. Between 1993 and 1996, he was the President of TECMATH Polska, a company focusing on advanced modeling and analysis software for a variety of fields including the automotive and media industries. Since 1995 he has been the Chief Executive Officer of BTInfo. Since 2006, he has been a member of the Board of Directors of B3 System, a public company listed on WSE (Warsaw Stock Exchange), a provider of end-to-end security solutions and services. Since 2007, Krzysztof has been the President of the Polish Association of Translation Agencies (PSBT).

 

Michał Tyszkowski
President, Centrum Lokalizacji C&M

After graduating with a Ph.D. in wetland ecology at the University of Wroclaw, Michał Tyszkowski worked for many years as a translator and tester for IBM. He gained a significant experience not only in translating, project management and software testing but also in system building procedures while working in IBM Headquarters in the United States. He started his own translation company in 1997 and then worked as CEO and VP R&D in LinguaNet Polska until 2007. Currently, he performs the duties of CEO in Centrum Lokalizacji C&M in Wroclaw, Poland. He speaks Polish, English and German

 

Monika Popiołek
President of MAart Agency Ltd and Vice President of PSBT

President of MAart Agency Ltd since 1991, in charge of business development, strategic and quality management. Graduate of the University of Warsaw English Institute (MA), Executive MBA Programme at the University of Warsaw Technology Business School (joint programme with LBS, HEC, NHH – MBA degree with distinction), and a PhD Management Programme at the College of Corporate Management at the Warsaw School of Economics. Since 2001 President of the biggest MBA association in Poland (SAAMBA). Founding member and currently Vice-President of the Polish Association of Translation Agencies (PSBT). Monika is also a certified sworn translator, translation industry expert to the Polish Labour Institute, part-time management lecturer and consultant, quality standards expert and auditor trainer and the Polish expert to the ISO SC2 Technical Committee.

 

  Claire Johnstone
Medtronic

Claire Johnstone is Outsourcing Coordinator at Medtronic. She is responsible for coordinating the translation and localisation of Medtronic software and documentation. Claire works with a number of external agencies on a daily basis and is responsible for vendor management. Before Medtronic she worked for EMBO and as a translator at SAP AG. Claire graduated from DCU (Dublin City University) with a BA in Applied Languages in 2000.

 

  Kirill Soloviev
Localization Program Manager, Acronis Russia

Kirill has a background on translation provider side, with experience as a senior localization manager, translation project manager and software developer at ITI Ltd., one of the major Russian LSPs. Now working on customer side at Acronis Inc., a worldwide-renown backup & recovery solutions provider (True Image Home, True Image Echo, Backup & Recovery, etc.), he is responsible for localization of all Acronis consumer, enterprise and OEM products into 10+ languages. At Acronis, Kirill is overseeing translation, linguistic review, software engineering, QA and release activities. Holds a degree in computer science from Moscow State University.

 

  Gábor Ugray
Head of Development, Kilgray Translation Technologies

Gábor is Kilgray’s ‘Renaissance man’ with a mix of interests ranging from linguistics and computer science to photography and translation. He was previously head of development for MorphoLogic’s machine translation solution, in charge of a team of five linguists and developers. He reversed gears and shifted from MT to TM when partnering up with Balázs and István to establish Kilgray. His role in the company is essentially one of a translator: he makes sure Kilgray’s dreams of look and feel are solidified into lines of formal code, and poses those hated down-to-earth technical questions to the dreamers. He won’t stop at talking bytes, and has been diligently learning his bit of Chinese for years.

 

Peter Reynolds
CEO and translation management consultant at TM-Global

An Irish national based in Warsaw, Peter holds an BSc and an MBA degree from Open University and is a localization and translation industry veteran. Prior to TM-Global he worked at Idiom Technologies Inc. (now SDL PLC). As director of the LSP Partner Program at Idiom, Peter was responsible for making its global LSP partners program a successful and innovative venture. Before Idiom he worked on language technology development for global localization companies: Lionbridge, Bowne Global Solutions and Berlitz GlobalNet. While there, he managed the Dublin development team responsible for BerlitzIT, Elcano, Freeway 2.0 technology solutions and internal project and vendor management tools. Peter has been actively involved — in the development and promotion of standards (notably XLIFF) for more than ten years — mostly at OASIS. Until 2008 (when XLIFF was published) he was Secretary of the XLIFF Technical Committee at OASIS and chaired the Translation Web Services TC. Peter is also involved in OASIS, TILP as well as being the Irish expert to ISO TC 37 (SC2 & SC4) and training auditors for the EN 15038 standard.
